nyservice2Saturday October 18th we had a peace dedication in Marcus Garvey Park, Manhattan. We had music, a history presentation of the park and neighborhood, a Global Peace Festival banner painting, a peace tree planting and we talked of the importance of peace in our communities and the world. College students, park administrators, people from the surrounding community, and even some youth passing by joined to celebrate our peace dedication. We collected 9 trees for Marcus Garvey Park, from a Million Trees NYC tree give away in Brooklyn. We dedicated a Sawtooth Oak tree for Peace and everyone who came out on Saturday made a pledge of peace by tying an orange peace ribbon onto the Peace tree. People of interreligious and intercultural backgrounds gathered together with the common goal and will for peace.

The NY/NJ Global Peace Festival was held in the Manhattan Center in New York City and was attended by 1400 people. In a "prelude" program, performances by the International Day of Peace Vigil Ensemble, the youth rock group, "Buffalo Eskimo", and the Tinkus-Bolivian Folk Dance brought the enthusiastic crowd to their feet in applause. After the stirring singing of the National Anthem by U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant Elizabeth Quinones, welcoming remarks were made by the Executive Director of GPF-USA, Rev. Paul Murray. Moving prayers were then offered by representatives of the three "Abrahamic" faiths- Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

citnsmAn Atlanta lawyer who attended the Global Peace Festival August 9 in Washington, DC, returned home to organize service activities to bring together local young people for the sake of peace. As a federal attorney and founder of the mentoring group “Brother to Brother,” Sheila Arnum had seen the effect that divisions in society have on young people, and the Global Peace Festival gave her new hope.

In preparation for the October 7 Global Peace Festival in Atlanta, Mrs. Arnum organized weekly opportunities for young people to make friends with people they would not ordinarily meet and experience the joy of doing good for others. The Saturday before the festival, 400 people young and old alike came together to clean Washington Park in Atlanta, working harmoniously as a sea of blue “Global Peace Festival” T-shirts.

What is GPF?

The Global Peace Festival promotes and celebrates persons and programs that contribute to reconciliation, mutual respect, harmony and cooperation among the members of the whole human family, as "One Family Under God". In partnership with a variety of faith-based organizations, NGOs, government agencies, educational institutions, and members of the private sector, GPF encourages programs that strengthen God-centered marriages and families, facilitate intercultural and interreligious cooperation, and foster a culture of peace and service. Ongoing programs are carried out throughout the year, and culminate in a biennial Global Peace Festival that consists of an international leadership conference, a social impact program, and a public celebration.
