Projects being organized will include decorating the school with portraits and quotes of Dr. King, designing signage for community gardens, creating holiday cards for sick children in a local hospital, and food and clothing distribution for veterans and their families. Partnering organizations for the service projects include Home Depot, which will provide volunteers and supplies; Operation HOPE, which is offering financial literacy classes for parents; the Chivers-Grant Institute of Morehouse College, which will host a Health Fair providing fresh produce and free blood pressure, dental and BMI screenings; After-School All-Stars; M.A.D.E., which will provide enriching games; and the Holistic Stress Control Institute, which will offer stress management workshops for parents. Students from local universities such as Clark Atlanta University and Georgia State University will also lead workshops to address such timely and critical topics as bullying and youth violence.
The event is supported by a grant from the Corporation for National and Community Service through Service For Peace, as well as in-kind contributions from local organizations and individuals. Working together in service empowers individuals to strengthen communities, overcome barriers, and create solutions to common problems, moving us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”
